Understanding the standard

What are Australian Standards?

Australian Standards are carefully developed guidelines that establish specifications, procedures and best practices to help ensure products, services and systems are safe, consistent and reliable.

Standards are developed and maintained by Standards Australia with input from industry experts, regulators and consumer groups. They are regularly reviewed as technology, materials and manufacturing practices evolve.

For customers, choosing a product that complies with the relevant Australian Standard provides confidence that it has been independently assessed and proven to meet strict safety, quality and performance requirements.

AS/NZS 4766 – Polyethylene Storage Tanks

AS/NZS 4766:2006
Polyethylene Storage Tanks for Water & Chemicals

This Standard sets out the design and manufacturing requirements for polyethylene tanks used to store water and certain chemical solutions under normal atmospheric conditions.

In simple terms, tanks certified to AS/NZS 4766 are built and tested to perform safely, reliably and consistently.

  • Material quality – the polyethylene must be suitable, UV-stabilised and appropriate for use in Australia's demanding outdoor conditions.
  • Wall thickness and strength – tanks must be manufactured with the required thickness and strength to withstand long-term water storage pressures.
  • Structural integrity – tanks must resist deformation, cracking and failure when transported and installed correctly.
  • Manufacturing consistency – production processes and quality controls must deliver a consistent, compliant finished product.
  • Long-term performance – tanks are designed and tested for extended service in harsh outdoor environments.

Why independent certification matters

Not all water tanks on the market are created equal. A product may be described as “made to standard” without being independently tested or certified.

Independent certification provides additional assurance that the tank, manufacturing process and materials have been assessed by an external certification body.

01

Proven compliance

The tank has undergone independent assessment and testing against the requirements of the Standard.

02

Trusted quality

Materials, manufacturing controls and product performance are subject to regular external review.

03

Suitable materials

Potable water tanks must use appropriate food-contact-grade materials suited to the intended application.

04

Built for Australia

Certified tanks are designed for demanding Australian conditions, including long-term exposure to sunlight and weather.
