Frequently Asked Questions
Find practical answers about tank sizing, fittings, delivery, installation, drinking water, warranties, pumps and buying from Tankworld Tasmania.
Choosing the Right Tank
Start with the intended water use, available space, roof catchment and capacity needed for your property.
01 What types of tanks does Tankworld offer?
Tankworld supplies round and slimline poly water tanks, fire tanks, septic tanks, industrial tanks, cartage tanks, Smart Tank systems and livestock troughs.
We also supply pumps, filtration, fittings, accessories and raised garden beds.
02 How do I choose the right water-tank size?
Consider your roof catchment, rainfall, available space and whether the water will supply a garden, home, livestock, business or dedicated fire reserve.
Where space and budget allow, selecting the largest practical capacity generally provides greater protection during dry periods.
03 How much rainwater can I collect from my roof?
As a general guide, 1 millimetre of rain falling on 1 square metre of roof can produce approximately 1 litre of water before allowing for system losses.
Actual collection is reduced by first-flush diversion, gutter overflow, evaporation, roof design and other losses.
04 Should I choose a round or slimline tank?
Round tanks usually provide the most economical capacity where adequate space is available. Slimline tanks suit narrower spaces beside homes, sheds and boundaries.
Check the full tank dimensions, delivery access, base requirements and plumbing clearances before deciding.
05 How heavy is a water tank when full?
One litre of water weighs approximately one kilogram. A 10,000-litre tank therefore contains about 10 tonnes of water, plus the weight of the tank itself.
The completed base must safely support the full water load without settling, erosion or movement.
06 What colours are available?
Tankworld poly tanks are available in a broad selection of colours based around popular COLORBOND® tones. Availability varies by model and product type.
Galvanised steel fire tanks are supplied in a galvanised finish.
07 How long can a poly water tank last?
A correctly installed and maintained poly tank can provide many years of service. Actual life depends on the base, plumbing, handling, exposure, maintenance and intended use.
Tankworld has manufactured poly tanks in Tasmania for over 30 years, and many properly installed tanks remain in service beyond their original warranty period.
08 Can multiple tanks be connected together?
Yes. Multiple tanks can be linked to increase total storage. Correct pipe sizing, tank levels, isolation valves, overflows and balancing should be considered.
A plumber or suitable water-system specialist should design the final connection arrangement.
Materials, Drinking Water and Standards
Understand which tanks are suitable for potable water and how Tankworld poly tanks are manufactured and certified.
09 Are Tankworld poly tanks suitable for drinking water?
Yes. Standard Tankworld poly water tanks are manufactured using UV-stabilised, food-grade polyethylene suitable for potable water storage.
Water quality also depends on the roof catchment, screens, pipework, first-flush management, filtration and ongoing system maintenance.
10 Are galvanised fire tanks suitable for drinking water?
No. Tankworld galvanised steel fire tanks are intended for dedicated fire-water storage and are not suitable for drinking water because of their material and intended application.
11 What material are Tankworld poly tanks made from?
Tankworld poly water tanks are rotationally moulded from UV-stabilised, food-grade polyethylene selected for outdoor water-storage applications.
12 Are Tankworld poly tanks certified to Australian Standards?
Tankworld poly water tanks are independently certified to AS/NZS 4766:2006 under BSI licence BMP 713704.
Learn more on our Australian Standards page .
13 Are poly water tanks recyclable?
Polyethylene is recyclable. Available recycling options depend on the tank’s condition, contamination and the facilities available in the customer’s area.
Fittings and Outlet Positions
Standard fittings are included, with exact sizes and positions depending on the selected tank model.
14 What fittings come with a standard poly tank?
Standard round and slimline poly tanks include an inlet strainer, overflow, outlet and ball valve.
Whether individual fittings are factory-fitted or supplied loose depends on the tank model and specified order.
15 What outlet size is standard?
- Tanks from 590 L to 5,500 L generally include a 25 mm / 1-inch outlet.
- Tanks from 10,000 L upward generally include a 40 mm / 1.5-inch outlet.
Confirm the final fitting size shown on the specific product page or quotation.
16 What overflow size is standard?
A 90 mm overflow is standard on most Tankworld poly water-tank models. Confirm the final size for the particular product being ordered.
17 What fittings come with a fire tank?
Tankworld fire tanks include a 50 mm / 2-inch outlet and ball valve, plus a 65 mm Storz fitting and dust cap.
Final requirements should be checked against the approved fire-tank design and building-surveyor requirements.
18 Can I choose the outlet position?
Outlet positions can generally be nominated using clockface positioning, subject to the available moulded fitting areas and structural features of the selected tank.
Inlet and overflow positions are generally predetermined. There is no standard charge for a nominated outlet position.
19 Can I order more than one outlet?
Multiple outlets may be available depending on the tank model, requested locations and intended use. Confirm all required positions before production begins.
20 Do Tankworld drivers install fittings or plumbing onsite?
No. Delivery does not include plumbing, base preparation, pump installation or onsite fitting installation.
The customer must arrange a licensed plumber or suitable contractor where required.
Delivery and Site Access
Delivery depends on safe commercial-vehicle access, a clear unloading area and the delivery option agreed before arrival.
21 Do you deliver tanks throughout Tasmania?
Tankworld provides statewide tank delivery subject to normal access, unloading and delivery conditions.
Flinders and King Island orders are generally delivered to the nominated freight port. Bruny Island delivery attracts an additional ferry charge.
22 What is Standard Delivery?
Standard Delivery is roll-off or lift-off unloading at the nearest location the driver considers safe and accessible.
The customer must be onsite to accept delivery. Final movement and positioning after unloading remain the customer’s responsibility.
23 What is Position on Pad delivery?
Position on Pad is a customer-assisted placement option for eligible round poly tanks where the base is complete and close to the safe unloading point.
The customer must provide the agreed number of physically capable adult helpers. The truck must be able to unload within approximately 10 metres of the pad over firm, reasonably level and unobstructed ground.
This service must be arranged and approved before delivery.
24 What access does the delivery truck require?
Allow approximately:
- 19 metres of vehicle length;
- 3.5 metres of access width;
- 5 metres of height clearance; and
- a clear 5 m × 5 m unloading area.
Safe turning and reversing space must also be available.
25 Can the truck use steep, soft, wet or unformed access?
Delivery vehicles require firm, dry and stable access suitable for a heavy commercial vehicle. Soft paddocks, unsafe slopes, unstable ground and unformed tracks are generally unsuitable.
The driver makes the final decision regarding safe access and unloading on delivery day.
26 Does someone need to be present for delivery?
Yes. An authorised person must be onsite to accept delivery, confirm the unloading location and make any necessary site decisions.
Agreed helpers must also be present for Position on Pad delivery.
27 What happens if access is unsuitable?
The driver may discuss an alternative safe unloading point, revert to Standard Delivery or return the tank to the depot.
Postponement, return-to-depot and redelivery charges may apply under the Terms and Conditions.
28 Is delivery included in the tank price?
Delivery is generally included for tanks 5,500 L and above, subject to normal statewide delivery conditions.
Island freight, unsuitable access, special handling, postponed delivery, redelivery or altered arrangements may incur additional charges. The quotation remains the final guide.
Tank Bases and Installation
The customer is responsible for a correctly prepared base and all plumbing, connections and regulatory approvals.
29 What type of base does a round poly tank require?
The base must be flat, smooth, level, fully supporting and adequately compacted. It should generally extend at least 300 mm beyond the tank on every side.
Suitable options may include compacted crusher dust or FCR, fine compacted road base, a suitable concrete slab or a purpose-designed tank stand.
Review the Installation Guide before preparing the site.
30 Do slimline tanks require a concrete base?
Slimline tanks require installation in accordance with the specific slimline instructions, including a suitable level concrete base and the required restraints or supports.
31 Can I place a tank directly on soil?
A tank should not be placed directly on unprepared soil. The base must provide firm, smooth, level and full support without sharp objects, soft spots, erosion or settlement.
32 Can a standard poly tank be buried?
Standard above-ground poly tanks are not designed for unrestricted soil pressure or full burial.
Limited partial burial may be possible only in accordance with Tankworld’s installation requirements. Discuss deeper or unusual installations with Tankworld before ordering because a special-build heavyweight tank may be required.
33 Who connects the tank, pump and pipework?
Tankworld supplies and delivers the tank under the agreed delivery option. The customer must arrange plumbing, electrical work, pump installation, downpipe connections, overflow pipework and other installation work.
34 Can I move the tank after delivery?
A tank should only be moved when completely empty. Never lift the tank from its roof, ribs or fittings.
Use appropriate slings, strops or handling equipment and arrange qualified assistance for large tanks.
Pumps, Filtration and Water Quality
Pump and treatment requirements depend on how the stored water will be used and the quality of the incoming supply.
35 Do I need a pump for my rainwater tank?
A pump is normally required for household fixtures, irrigation, garden taps and other uses requiring practical pressure and flow.
Pump selection depends on the number of outlets, pipework, required pressure, intended use and available power.
36 Can a tank operate by gravity without a pump?
Some elevated systems can operate by gravity, but the pressure depends on the vertical difference between the tank water level and the outlet.
Gravity systems may not provide adequate pressure for normal household use.
37 Do I need a first-flush diverter?
A first-flush diverter can help prevent the initial roof runoff, dust and debris from entering the tank. It is particularly useful where tank water will be used inside the home.
38 What filtration is needed for drinking water?
Treatment may include sediment filtration, carbon filtration and UV disinfection depending on the source water, household use and desired treatment level.
A suitable system should be selected for the property rather than assuming one filter arrangement suits every installation.
39 How should I maintain and clean my water tank?
Keep gutters, downpipes, inlet screens and first-flush devices clean. Check the overflow, fittings, base and surrounding area regularly.
Never enter a water tank. Internal inspection or cleaning is confined-space work and must only be undertaken by appropriately trained professionals.
Tankworld Poly-Tank Warranty
Tankworld provides a full 10-year manufacturer’s warranty rather than reducing cover on a pro-rata basis.
40 What warranty comes with a Tankworld poly water tank?
Tankworld poly water tanks carry a full 10-year manufacturer’s warranty from the date of delivery, subject to correct installation, eligible use and the written warranty terms.
Fittings have a separate 12-month manufacturer’s warranty. Fire tanks carry their own standalone warranty and conditions.
41 Is Tankworld’s 10-year warranty pro-rata?
No. Tankworld’s poly-tank warranty is not reduced on a pro-rata basis during the 10-year warranty period.
42 What does a pro-rata warranty mean?
A pro-rata warranty reduces the manufacturer’s contribution as the product ages.
A product promoted with a 15-year pro-rata warranty may provide only part of the replacement value in later years, leaving the customer to contribute the remaining cost.
43 Is a 15-year pro-rata warranty automatically better?
No. The advertised number of years does not show the full value of the warranty.
Compare whether cover reduces with age, customer contributions, available remedies, freight and labour exclusions, installation requirements and ownership conditions.
44 What happens if an eligible warranty claim is approved?
Tankworld may repair or replace an eligible tank at its discretion in accordance with the warranty terms.
Labour, removal, plumbing, freight and consequential losses are excluded.
45 Does the warranty transfer to a new owner?
No. Warranty coverage applies to the original purchaser and does not transfer when the tank or property changes ownership.
46 What information is needed for a warranty claim?
Retain proof of purchase and provide clear photographs showing the reported fault, tank, base, fittings and surrounding installation when requested.
Orders, Payment and Tank Collection
Tanks are generally made to order, so payment, colours, fittings and delivery details should be confirmed carefully.
47 When is payment required?
Full payment is required when the order is placed unless Tankworld Tasmania agrees otherwise in writing.
The order and its pricing are not secured until payment has been received and cleared.
48 Can I cancel or change an order?
Tanks are made to order. Changes to the product, size, colour, fittings or delivery details are subject to production status and may not always be possible.
Confirmed changes and cancellations are subject to the applicable cancellation fee under Tankworld Tasmania’s Terms and Conditions. Redelivery and other charges may also apply.
49 How long will my tank take to manufacture and deliver?
Lead times vary according to tank model, colour, production scheduling, stock availability and delivery area.
Confirm the current estimated timeframe with your Tankworld store when placing the order.
50 Can I collect my tank instead of having it delivered?
Store pickup may be arranged through the Tankworld store where the purchase is made. Factory collection is not available.
As a general guide, tanks up to approximately 5,000 L may be suitable for collection using an appropriate ute or trailer. Larger tanks generally require specialised transport, lifting and handling.
Collection must be approved beforehand. The customer must provide a suitable vehicle and effective load-restraint equipment.
Fire Tanks
Fire-water requirements depend on the property, building approval, bushfire assessment and the authority signing off the project.
51 Who should confirm my fire-tank requirements?
A building surveyor is generally the best primary contact because they assess and sign off the building project.
Council, Tasmania Fire Service and other relevant authorities may also provide advice. Confirm all approved requirements before ordering.
52 Can a standard poly tank be used as a fire reserve?
A potable poly tank may be accepted as dedicated fire-water storage in limited applications.
Suitability depends on planning approval, bushfire rating, required fittings, siting and building-surveyor acceptance.
53 Are galvanised fire tanks suitable for drinking water?
No. Galvanised steel fire tanks are intended for dedicated fire-water storage and are not suitable for potable drinking water.
Smart Tank Systems
Monitor selected Tankworld tanks remotely using an Agbot tank-level monitoring system.
54 What is included in a Smart Tank package?
Smart Tank packages for selected 10,000 L to 24,000 L tanks include an Agbot tank-level monitor.
Installation and setup are not included unless specifically stated in writing.
55 Does Agbot require mobile coverage?
Agbot monitoring is available using cellular or satellite connectivity. The appropriate option depends on coverage at the property.
56 Are there ongoing Agbot service charges?
Yes. Both cellular and satellite Agbot systems have applicable annual service charges.
Septic Tanks
Tankworld supplies the septic tank. System design, approvals, excavation and plumbing must be arranged separately.
57 What comes with a Tankworld septic tank?
Septic tanks include a 100 mm inlet and outlet and arrive ready to plumb into and away from.
Risers are sold separately.
58 Does Tankworld design or install septic systems?
No. Tankworld supplies the tank. A building designer prepares the wastewater-system design, council approval is required, and a plumber completes installation and commissioning.
59 Are septic tanks delivered like standard round tanks?
No. Septic tanks are lifted off rather than rolled.
The customer must arrange any machinery or lifting required to move the tank beyond the accessible unloading location unless a different arrangement is agreed in writing.
Tankworld Tasmania and Mainland Pricing
